SFL Students Make a Good Showing in the 8th Cross-strait Interpreting Contest (Southwest Regional Final)

On Sunday, November 24, 2019, the 8th cross-strait interpreting contest (southwest regional final) was held in Chongqing Normal University. 62 contestants from more than 30 universities participated in Southwest Regional Final competition. Among the participating universities in Guizhou Province, two contestants representing our school: Hongyu Wu and Yunfei Chen made a good showing under the guidance of their tutors, Jixin Huang and Lei Tang. Hongyu Wu, a translation major of grade 2017, earned an Honorable Mention.

The competition is divided into gist interpretation and conference interpretation. It fully tests the students' abilities of bilingual conversion, memory, interpretation notes, psychological quality, and so on. The atmosphere of the competition was dynamic and tense. Hongyu Wu performed well in the first round of the competition and got an Honorable Mention, rivalling the contestants from Sichuan University, Chongqing University, Sichuan Foreign University.
The competition is highly valued by the leaders of School of Foreign Languages and teachers of interpreting courses. This competition provides a good opportunity for the improvement of interpreting teaching. In the communication with university teachers and students within and beyond the Guizhou Province, we have seen the strengths and flaws of interpreting teaching in our school.

The cross-strait interpreting contest, as an annual interpretation event sponsored by Xiamen University and approved by the Ministry of education and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the People’s Republic of China, has become a widely influential event on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The competition, professional, scientific and challenging, provides an excellent platform for the exchange of interpreters between the two sides. The practice and exchange of this competition provides a model for our college's interpreting teaching and arouses the passion of the students for interpreting.
